What the CBD?

Are herbal remedies the best for you? Is a natural way the way to go? These are the questions I've been asking myself for some time.

I come from a family of doctors who write scripts but my family and I have started to talk about the benefits of using herbal remedies.

Before I go on I need to just say that Hobby Hydro and Home Brew does not endorse or encourage the use of illegal remedies or substances.

The United States are pioneers in the use of herbal remedies such as CBD Oil.

Wait you don't know what CBD Oil is?

  • Cannabidiol or better known as CBD is a popular natural remedy used for many common ailments, it is one of the 104 chemical compounds known as cannabinoids found in the cannabis or marijuana plant, Cannabis sativa
  • Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the main psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis and causes the sensation of getting “high” that’s often associated with marijuana. However, unlike THC, CBD is not psychoactive.
  • This quality makes CBD an appealing option for those who are looking for relief from pain and other symptoms without the mind-altering effects of marijuana or certain pharmaceutical drugs.
  • CBD oil is made by extracting CBD from the cannabis plant, then diluting it with a carrier oil like coconut or hemp seed oil.
  • It’s gaining momentum in the health and wellness world, with some scientific studies confirming it may help treat a variety of ailments like chronic pain and anxiety.

So if CBD oil is claimed to be so amazing it must be legal, drug companies must be worried and so on?

In Australia, CBD oil is a Schedule 4 drug. It's available under certain conditions from pharmacies with a valid prescription from a doctor.

In America, the answer varies from state to state. If you live in a state that has legalised cannabis for medical or recreational purposes, you're in the clear. But there are also "CBD only" states, where cannabis is otherwise illegal, but you won't get in trouble for using CBD oil. As always, check with your state for the up-to-date details.

The reason why it isn't readily available in Australia is there isn't enough local research for the Governments to approve the unconditional use. But I am sure this will soon change.

Because it has been illegal or stigmatized for decades, the body of cannabis research available is, in many ways, incomplete. But Canada’s federal government is taking advantage of the country’s status as the only G7 country to have legalized marijuana and addressing that issue.

It was announced yesterday that nearly $25 million will be used to fund cannabis research in Canada.

So what are the benefits of CBD Oil?

Keep in mind that the research is limited and a lot of the benefits aren't proven as of yet.

Relief of Pain

More recently, scientists have discovered that certain components of marijuana, including CBD, are responsible for its pain-relieving effects.

The human body contains a specialized system called the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is involved in regulating a variety of functions including sleep, appetite, pain and immune system response.

The body produces endocannabinoids, which are neurotransmitters that bind to cannabinoid receptors in your nervous system.

Studies have shown that CBD may help reduce chronic pain by impacting endocannabinoid receptor activity, reducing inflammation and interacting with neurotransmitters.

Several human studies have found that a combination of CBD and THC is effective in treating pain related to multiple sclerosis and arthritis.

Could reduce Anxiety and Depression

Anxiety and depression are common mental health disorders that can have devastating impacts on health and well-being.

CBD oil has shown promise as a treatment for both depression and anxiety, leading many who live with these disorders to become interested in this natural approach.

In one study, 24 people with social anxiety disorder received either 600 mg of CBD or a placebo before a public speaking test.

The group that received the CBD had significantly less anxiety, cognitive impairment, and discomfort in their speech performance, compared to the placebo group.

CBD oil has even been used to safely treat insomnia and anxiety in children with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Keep in mind that these are some of the examples of how CBD Oil could help and there is still more research that needs to be done.

That is why Hobby Hydro and Home Brew will be announcing soon a joint incentive in which we will be crowdfunding money to lobby the Federal Government in relaxing the current laws around CBD Oil by providing them with independent research.

The money that we hope to raise will be used to pay for a Ph.D. Candidate to research and publish a detailed paper on the benefits of CBD Oil.
